Find out more about your teeth in order to understand dental pain.
Why does toothache often come on suddenly and rarely gradually? Because tooth structure is designed to resist, but only up to a certain extent!1
How do cavities develop?
Our mouths contain bacteria from food residues. When they come into contact with our teeth, they cause the formation of dental plaque, a whitish substance that attaches itself to our teeth and is removed by brushing.2 The bacteria it contains transform sugar into acid which, over time, attacks the enamel and digs a hole in it. This is called tooth decay. If not treated in time, decay worsens and pain sets in.3
From decay to abscess to toothache.
If left untreated, decay can eventually reach the heart of the tooth, allowing bacteria to spread to nerves and blood vessels. Infection sets in, and an abscess forms.4
The main symptom is intense pain, which can become throbbing and radiate to the ears and other areas of the face. Other signs to watch out for include4:
- A fever;
- Facial swelling;
- Swollen gums or glands in the neck;
- Difficulty opening the mouth, swallowing or moving the tongue;
- An unpleasant taste in the mouth.
In the fight against cavities, why not avoid them?
Cavities can be prevented through good oral hygiene, which limits the formation of plaque.6
- Regular brushing is essential, at least twice a day for two minutes, and even after each meal.6
- This can be combined with flossing or mouthwash.6
- A healthy, balanced diet, moderate in sugar. Instead, choose nutritious foods and snacks such as plain yogurt, cheese, raw vegetables or fruit.6
- Regular dental check-ups help keep teeth healthy.6

To wrap up
If you have a toothache, the only thing to remember is to make an appointment with your dentist. Don't go thinking “I'll just take paracetamol, it'll go away”.8
No need to wait for complications.
Did you know?
To avoid risks as much as possible, even when you're not in pain, you should see your dentist for a check-up at least once a year.10
