Find out more about your teeth in order to understand dental pain.

Why does toothache often come on suddenly and rarely gradually? Because tooth structure is designed to resist, but only up to a certain extent!1

How do cavities develop?

Our mouths contain bacteria from food residues. When they come into contact with our teeth, they cause the formation of dental plaque, a whitish substance that attaches itself to our teeth and is removed by brushing.2 The bacteria it contains transform sugar into acid which, over time, attacks the enamel and digs a hole in it. This is called tooth decay. If not treated in time, decay worsens and pain sets in.3

From decay to abscess to toothache.

If left untreated, decay can eventually reach the heart of the tooth, allowing bacteria to spread to nerves and blood vessels. Infection sets in, and an abscess forms.4

Don't be afraid! The “fear of the dentist” is one of the indirect causes of dental abscesses.5

Fear of dentists is more common in females than in males. Some studies suggest that nearly 3% of men and almost 5% of women have dentophobia.5

The main symptom is intense pain, which can become throbbing and radiate to the ears and other areas of the face. Other signs to watch out for include4:

  • A fever;
  • Facial swelling;
  • Swollen gums or glands in the neck;
  • Difficulty opening the mouth, swallowing or moving the tongue;
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth.

There's no time to lose when it comes to dental abscesses.

See a dentist as soon as possible.4

In addition, an abscess caused by infection of the tooth pulp consists of a build-up of pus in the roots and gums, which can lead to further complications.4

In the fight against cavities, why not avoid them?

Cavities can be prevented through good oral hygiene, which limits the formation of plaque.6

  • Regular brushing is essential, at least twice a day for two minutes, and even after each meal.6
  • This can be combined with flossing or mouthwash.6
  • A healthy, balanced diet, moderate in sugar. Instead, choose nutritious foods and snacks such as plain yogurt, cheese, raw vegetables or fruit.6
  • Regular dental check-ups help keep teeth healthy.6

Relieving tooth pain right away

There's only one highly effective remedy for tooth decay: the dentist. He or she is the only one who can provide the treatment best suited to the stage of decay.7

While medications containing paracetamol won't cure tooth decay, they can help you cope with the pain8, like Doliprane 1000.9

Don't Do

Do not combine with other paracetamol-containing drugs, to avoid the risk of overdosing. An overdose of paracetamol can cause irreversible liver damage.9

To wrap up

If you have a toothache, the only thing to remember is to make an appointment with your dentist. Don't go thinking “I'll just take paracetamol, it'll go away”.8

No need to wait for complications.

Did you know?

To avoid risks as much as possible, even when you're not in pain, you should see your dentist for a check-up at least once a year.10
